With the Strike-it™ method, measurement of concrete compressive strength does not require expensive bulky equipment or specialized facilities and can quickly and easily be done at a work site. The sample under test is placed on a soft surface and gently struck at a prescribed location. The sound produced in response to the strike is recorded on the Strike-it™ Tester, and the sound signal is analyzed to estimate the sample’s compressive strength. Overall, the test takes about a second to complete and very little preparation or specialized training is required.

An exciting aspect of Strike-it™ is that broad global benefit can be achieved without a large deployment of purpose-built hardware: The solution can be run on ubiquitous cellphones or tablet computers. This greatly reduces the overall cost of implementing the solution throughout any given region. Indeed, it may ultimately be possible to significantly reduce the overall time and cost concrete compressive strength testing through adoption of Strike-it™ method.

SoundQA intends to continue our research efforts to further corroborate our findings, refine the method and to extend the method for application to a broader range of masonry elements. We welcome collaboration with industry partners on these explorations

A systematic Quality Assurance process calls for maintenance of records of the testing and regular preparation of reports to confirm that the process is being diligently followed and to identify quality issues that need attention. For Strike-it™, such test record management is initiated on the Tester, on which records of completed tests can be saved, recalled and analyzed. For more comprehensive analyses, records of completed tests can be uploaded to a Strike-it™ Server which can aggregate test records from multiple Strike-it™ Testers and multiple sites.
